Unitree G1 Achieves Human-like Walking Gait in 2 Days

Unitree Robotics says its G1 humanoid robot achieved an impressive human-like walking gait with just two days of training.

The new demo comes a week after EngineAI came from out of nowhere and blew the Internet away with its humanoid robot’s shockingly realistic gait. The Chinese robotics startup, founded just a year ago, says its SE01 robot uses advanced end-to-end neural networks to master smooth, human-like walking.

With training, EngineAI’s robot has overcome challenges like jerky steps and bent knees. It combines reinforcement and imitation learning with a custom joint system to make smooth, flexible, and human-like movements.

Unitree’s G1 recently became the likely holder for the longest standing long jump achieved by a humanoid robot its size. The company recently shared footage of the AI robot performing a 1.4 meter long jump, which exceeds its height.

Unitree employs a combination of simulation and real-world testing to train its robots.

The G1 features 23 to 43 joint motors depending on the model. It walks at speeds up to 2 meters per second. Its battery provides about 2 hours of use per charge, with quick-release functionality for easy swapping. The G1 comes equipped with advanced sensors, including Intel RealSense and 3D LiDAR so it can see and navigate its environment.

It can be fitted with dexterous hands that can perform delicate tasks like opening bottles, handling fragile items, and even welding. The hands use force-controlled technology to simulate the precision of human hands. Unitree says the robot excels at household and industrial tasks.
