Apple Acquires Datakalab, French Startup Used for Covid Compliance Monitoring

Apple has quietly acquired a French AI startup used for monitoring Covid compliance.

The deal to acquire Datakalab closed in December 2023 but went unreported, the French business magazine Challenge reports.

Datakalab specializes in emotion recognition technology. During the pandemic, Datakalab tech was used to monitor mask compliance in Paris, according to Fast Company.

It was also used for monitoring social distancing at bus stops and markets in Cannes.

Earlier this year, Apple quietly acquired Canadian startup Darwin AI in its broad push to integrate AI into its operations and offerings.
