A company you’ve probably never heard of is well on its way to pushing its AI-powered humanoid robots to the mass market.
After a rapid ascent to the upper echelon of China’s robotics scene, Shanghai-based AgiBot just officially started large scale sales. Its robots, and pricing, could seriously disrupt the race toward synthetic humans, giving perceived leaders from Unitree Robotics to Tesla a run for their money.
At the center of it all is a fiercely competitive 32-year-old engineer with a cult following, a sizable war chest and a government-backed runway, taking his shot at reshaping the future of automation.
Who is Peng Zhihui?
AgiBots rising profile is tied closely to the story of its founder, Peng Zhihui, who’s achieved near celebrity status in China’s tech circles.
Born in 1993, Peng showed an early obsession with electronics, growing up playing GameBoy in the tech-heavy Guangdong province. His highly competitive nature elevated his stature during his studies at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) in Chengdu.

He designed a smart temperature control system that won first place in a prestigious national electronic design competition. In 2015, Peng co-founded a 3D printing startup with a classmate, raising nearly 700 thousand dollars.
While earning his master’s degree, he developed a bipedal robot capable of obstacle avoidance and autonomous navigation. The project won the innovation award at the 2016 World Robot Conference (WRC) in Beijing.
Huawei Genius Youth
After graduation, Peng joined Huawei as part of its HiSilicon chip division. The Shenzhen-based tech giant selected the young engineer for its Genius Youth Program.
Internally known as Top Minds, the program was designed to attract top-tier STEM talent from within the People’s Republic. The recruitment included a rigorous seven round interview process. He served as an AI algorithm engineer in Huawei’s computing product line. Media reports estimated his annual salary at around 2 million yuan (nearly $300K).

During his tenure, he built up a strong online presence, earning a reputation in the DIY tech community, with creations like an Iron Man-inspired robotic arm and a self-riding bicycle.

In late 2022, Peng announced on BiliBili that he was leaving Huawei to start his own venture. He officially launched the company he’s now known for the following February.
AgiBot’s Launch
Registered as Shanghai Zhiyuan Technology, the startup is known globally as AgiBot, a name that combines the words AGI (for artificial general intelligence) and Bot (for robot). Zhiyuan roughly translates to intelligent origin.

“The entire physical world we live in is designed for the human form factor, so we make robots that look like humans,” Peng said during a livestreamed investors meeting in 2024.
When Peng launched AgiBot, the humanoid robotics market was on the brink of a rapid expansion, especially in China. Robots like Tesla’s Optimus, Agility Robotics’ Digit, Ameca by Engineered Arts, Atlas by Boston Dynamics, and the CyberOne by Xiaomi, were generating buzz, but experts and investors viewed it through a skeptical lens.

Humanoids were seen as expensive R&D projects, not serious business endeavors. Still, the idea of humanlike machines operating alongside real people was gaining traction. The rise of ChatGPT sparked massive investor interest in all things AI. In the West, companies like Figure AI, 1X Technologies, and Agility Robotics attracted hundreds of millions of dollars in funding.
Chinese leaders saw how quickly artificial intelligence could transform global power dynamics. Beijing began treating generative AI as a strategic technology, linking it directly to robotics, automation, and economic competitiveness. State media framed large language models as proof that AI-driven humanoids could soon leap from research labs and into the workforce.
China was in a particularly advantageous position to lead the market, already dominating manufacturing and industrial robotics.
AgiBot secured early support from major investors like Sequoia Capital China, Hillhouse Capital, and the electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. Within just a few months, AgiBot closed two Series A funding rounds that propelled it to unicorn status.
AgiBots first humanoid robot, called the RAISE A1, launched in August 2023. Shanghai’s robust supply chain helped minimize delays in procurement and assembly, so the growing team could get a working prototype in just six months. Standing 175 cm (5 feet 7 inches), the robot boasted a reported 49 degrees of freedom for tasks like bolt tightening, vehicle inspections, and lab work.

By late 2023, an overprescribed round brought an additional $85 million and attracted strategic and technical investors including Baidu and the incubator Miracle Plus. At the same time, the Chinese government made it national policy to mass produce humanoids by 2025 and own the emerging market by 2027.
Local governments in Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Beijing offered subsidies, tax breaks, and research and development funding to attract the most innovative robotics firms. Humanoid robots became central to Beijing’s solution to worsening workforce challenges, especially in manufacturing, healthcare, eldercare, and services.

Chinese policy makers view humanoid robotics as a platform technology. As they see it, whoever dominates it , could control the future of global automation.
AgiBots funding momentum continued into 2024 and beyond. By mid 2025, AgiBot had completed at least eight funding rounds in just two years, and its valuation climbed to more than a billion dollars.
Flagship A2 Humanoid
AgiBot’s flagship is the A2 , a general-purpose humanoid that stands 169 cm (5 feet 5 inches) and features a modular design and customizable exteriors.
The robot’s design leverages Peng’s expertise in edge computing, which is the ability to run powerful AI models and process sensory data directly on the hardware without needing cloud connectivity. This means the humanoid can engage in lifelike conversations powered by large language models without lagging.

Its AI robot brain can run 200 TOPS, which helps it instantly recognize faces with 96 percent accuracy, understand voice commands, and react to its surroundings in real time. AgiBot boasts that its custom middleware, called AimRT, is faster and more efficient than traditional robot frameworks like the Robot Operating System (ROS).
The A2’s base model is geared toward interactive service applications, like customer-facing roles in reception and tour guiding.
AgiBot World
Heading into 2025, AgiBot shared footage of its factory in Shanghai’s Lingang Fengxian district, saying it had manufactured nearly a thousand humanoids already. According to Chinese reports, around 200 of the robots were for internal use and the rest were shipped to customers.
Many of them are running in what AgiBot calls the largest embodied data collection facility, where 100 robots continuously collect real world and simulation data. The facility covers more than 4,000 square meters and contains over 3,000 real objects. The robots use the training grounds to learn to do laundry, cook, shop for groceries, and a wide range of other domestic and industrial tasks.

The startup calls the dataset it’s building AgiBot World. It’s the basis for the firm’s end-to-end AI model called Genie Operator 1 (GO-1) that integrates a vision-language-action (VLA) model with a mixture-of-experts (MoE) system. With GO-1, robots learn with help from human videos and demonstrations. According to AgiBot, the model adapts across different form factors so robots can share intelligence.
It continuously evolves from real world information to become smarter over time.
Large-Scale Commercialization
AgiBots latest move just significantly increased its competitiveness, especially against its main Chinese rival, Unitree Robotics.

The company just started large-scale commercial sales of its robots online, at its own ecommerce site and JD.com, one of the world’s largest Internet retailers and also an AgiBot investor. Robots for sale include:
- AgiBot A2 Youth Edition: A cost-effective variant of AgiBot’s flagship intended for applications like entertainment and event marketing, that starts around $23K. It boasts 23 high-flexibility joints, while the flagship A2 has 49 as well as larger actuators and more advanced AI for enterprise service.
- AgiBot Lingxi X2 Youth Edition: The startup’s newest humanoid platform focused on interaction and task learning, which starts under $14K. The compact humanoid, which stands 1.3 meters (4 feet 2 inches) and weighs 34 kg (74 lbs), has a reported 27 degrees of freedom (DoF), a flexible outer shell, and comes preloaded with 20 preset action routines. It can be controlled via a mobile app.
- AgiBot D1 Pro: A 15 kg (33 lb) quadruped built for entertainment purposes, starting around $1,800. The robodog reaches running speeds up of 3.3 m/s (7.3 mph), jumps up to 35 cm (1 foot 1 inch), and climbs stairs as high as 16 cm (5 inches).
- AgiBot D1 Ultra: Educational version of AgiBot’s robotic dog with open interfaces and support for custom programming that starts around $5K.
- AgiBot OmniHand: A dexterous robotic end effector listed around $2K, which the company says is a new low for the capabilities.
- Agibot Genie G1: The highest-priced item in AgiBot’s shop, a wheeled humanoid robot designed for industrial, commercial, and research applications. Adjustable from 130 cm to 180 cm (4 foot 2 to 5 feet 9) and weighing 150 kg (330 lbs), the G1 has 26 degrees of upper-body freedom and can operate autonomously with a 360-degree sensor suite. Priced starting over $60K.
- AgiBot C5: An autonomous cleaning machine, starting around $23K, that combines sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and mopping functions in one machine.
The cleaning bot makes AgiBot competitive with companies like Shanghai’s KEENON Robotics and Shenzhen-based Pudu Robotics, which are leading the commercial robotics market and have both shipped more than 100,000 units. KEENON and Pudu have also both launched their own wheeled and biped humanoids that they’re selling into their sizable customer bases.
AgiBot vs. Unitree
With its ecommerce strategy, AgiBot is also positioning itself as a mass-market robotics brand. They’re targeting a broader audience than Hangzhou-based Unitree, whose quadrupedal and humanoid robots are popular with research labs and early tech adopters.

AgiBot’s pricing and packaging suggest a strategy focused on scale and ubiquity. Unitree is optimized for depth over breadth, targeting developers, AI researchers, and power users looking for hardware they can push to its limits.
AgiBots in the Real World
AgiBot’s diverse line of machines are making their way into the real world.
The startup recently announced that Fulin Precision has ordered nearly 100 of its A2-W wheeled industrial humanoids to deploy at its factories in China.

AgiBots highest profile collaboration so far is with Pepsi, which appointed a customized A2 humanoid as its first robotic brand ambassador. The robot, named Fizzbot, debuted during a presentation featuring David Beckham. Pepsi-branded AgiBot humanoids could be seen serving soft drinks to guests at events like the 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai.
Future Plans
Heading into 2026, AgiBot appears to have no intention of slowing down.

As industry observers speculate that AgiBot is fast tracking its way to an IPO, the startup is preparing its next-gen releases for the real world. AgiBot just shared footage of a wheeled Lingxi X2 humanoid prototype designed for household tasks like laundry and tidying up.
The ability to do laundry is especially coveted as it’s particularly difficult for robots. In Silicon Valley, the unicorn robotics startup Figure AI recently reported making great strides toward full laundry automation.
